Ability to ‘Adapt’ to Stress in Daily Life is Important for Your Health & Longevity

Have you ever wondered what defines health, or why someone you know can maintain optimal health while others around you can’t? Surely it isn’t as simple as keeping your blood pressure, cholesterol, weight and other ‘health’ markers within normal limits, is it? Nope!
You may have heard that health is not a destination, but rather a process. So, the question remains: what factor plays the most significant role in the ‘process’ of health?
Through shifting perspectives and evolutions in science and clinical research, the human body is now being viewed by modern healthcare practitioners in a much more holistic way.
We no longer view it as a collection of separate organs and tissues working alongside one another (like parts in a car), but an interconnected system of organs and tissues working together in a fluid way to maintain health and function (like an ecosystem).
Keep this distinction in mind as we explore the most important factor pertaining to the process of health: adaptability.
The first thing to understand regarding adaptability is that inside of the human body, billions of reactions, feedback loops and processes are occurring every second to maintain homeostasis. Homeostasis can be defined as the process of maintaining a stable internal physiological state in the face of ever changing internal and external conditions.
This brings up another important concept in our understanding of adaptability: that fact the body’s internal and external conditions are always changing, forcing the body to adapt to these unique conditions every moment of every day.
To reiterate, the body is working non-stop to maintain a stable internal physiological state (ie. to maintain its health). It is also constantly responding to different internal and external conditions that challenge this process.
Therefore, maintaining homeostasis (health) is fundamentally the result of how well the body can adapt to the constantly changing conditions it is exposed to.

Adapting to the Environment
How does your body interact with its environment? How does it adapt to maintain internal health and vitality? Although various systems play an active role in the process, one is of utmost importance and does most of the work: the nervous system.
The nervous system is called the ‘master controlling and communicating system’ of the body. It allows for the communication and coordination between every cell, tissue and organ. From perceiving its internal and external environment to creating a plan and executing it, your body senses and controls itself through its nervous system.
Therefore, ensuring optimal nervous system function is paramount when pursuing health and longevity. Unbeknownst to many people, this is actually the fundamental intent of Chiropractic Care: to achieve and maintain optimal nervous system function.
Although Chiropractic is often associated with the bones, muscles and joints of the spine, these tissues are actually of secondary importance to the nervous system. Simply put, chiropractic helps increase the body’s ability to adapt by fine tuning the nervous system to function in a healthy, balanced state.
Benefits of Being ‘Adaptable’
Some of the benefits of increased adaptability through an optimized nervous system are seen in a publication from 2007 in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics (JMPT).
This report demonstrated that patients who saw a Chiropractor as their primary healthcare provider (versus a medical doctor) experienced:
- 60% decrease in in-hospital admissions
- 59% decrease in hospital days
- 62% decrease in outpatient surgeries and procedures
- 85% decrease in pharmaceutical costs
In summary, health is largely achieved through our ability to quickly and accurately adapt to ever-changing conditions, and the primary system responsible for this is the nervous system. Also see:

Chiropractic Care & Nervous System Health
Chiropractic, at its core, is aimed at optimizing the function of the nervous system. Therefore, since Chiropractic is mainly concerned with nervous system function, one of the results of Chiropractic Care is increased adaptability and improved overall health.
If you are curious how your nervous system is functioning, Revelation Health Centre uses modern, scientific, state of the art technology to measure nervous system function. This includes:
- Infrared thermography
- Surface electromyography
- Heart rate variability
Not only is your nervous system measured on your first visit, but at regular intervals throughout your care. This is to ensure that not only are you feeling better as you progress through care, but that your nervous system is functioning better as well.
