What is Vertigo?
If you’re reading this article, chances are you’re familiar with what this symptom already is. It causes a sensation for the sufferer that they, or their environment, is moving or spinning.
This can be so mild that it’s just slightly noticeable, or so severe that it’s completely incapacitating.
Dizziness, nausea and loss of balance are often accompanied with a bout of vertigo. These “episodes” sometimes come and go within a matter of seconds while other times they may last much longer – for weeks on end.
The latter would make day-to-day living very difficult to say the least, which is why getting treatment for your vertigo ass soon as you have it is very important!
What Causes Vertigo?
Most often this symptom results due to a problem within the inner ear. However, other commonly known causes include:
- Damage to the spinal cord
- Migraines and headaches
- Misaligned and / or dislocated neck vertebrae
- Brain conditions such as strokes or tumours
- Other head and neck injuries
- Meniere’s disease
- Viral infection of the inner ear
- Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)

Depending on what the cause of your vertigo is, Chiropractic care might just be the perfect solution!
Vertigo resulting from misaligned joints, spinal cord / neck injury or migraines can be effectively treated by Chiropractic manual therapy methods. Learn more about subluxations here.
Soft tissue therapy can also help heal any ligaments, tendons or muscles that are in tension and may be causing misalignment.
There’s also an adjustment technique that Chiropractors use for the inner ear. Called the Epley Maneuver, it helps to realign the bony particles called otoconia inside your ear.
There’s also do-it-yourself home exercises designed to help strengthen the inner ear’s balancing system.
An initial assessment by one of our Chiropractors will determine what the course of treatment will be for your vertigo. Listen to what Dr. John has to say about treating vertigo in Calgary:
A Word on Vertigo…
Vertigo is a very complex issue where most of the time it comes from an imbalance in the anterior, lateral and / or posterior canals within the inner ear. Occasionally it comes from the vertical canals that balance us from top to bottom.
This condition is basically an imbalance in the nerve firing from anterior to posterior or from one lateral side to the other canals which can cause the head to feel dizzy.
The eyes, the cerebellum and the vestibular canals are on the same nervous system circuitry and talk to each other. The eyes can also be feeding unhealthy input into the vestibular canals which can give the brain two different images and that feeds into the vestibular mechanism and causes people to feel dizzy or nauseous or imbalanced like they are going to fall over.
I treat the vestibular system every day that I am at work in patients who are concussion injured. There are specific techniques to treating a vestibular imbalance but only after a specific and comprehensive clinical examination to determine what part of the vestibular system and / or supporting brain areas are not firing equally in comparison to other parts.
Stimulating healthy neurological input into the vestibular mechanism and the cerebellum (usually only one side needs input to balance the system out) using concussion rehab techniques very often re-equates the firing of the canals. Most patients respond within a few to several treatments, although in other cases it can be quite a complex issue.
If you’re looking for vertigo treatment in Calgary, I would be happy to do a thorough examination begin treating the causes of your symptom!
