Sports Injury Clinic in Calgary: Why Us?
Are you suffering from some type of sports-related injury? If so, it’s in your best interests to seek out a sports injury clinic in Calgary and consult a physician or chiropractor to determine what the cause of your injury is and how to go about treating it.
Many athletes often ignore mild injuries because they are “just part of the game” and choose not to report them or seek treatment. Also see these 5 Reasons Why Many Athletes Rely on Chiropractic Care.
Because all sports injuries are musculoskeletal in nature, ignoring them can cause your body to compensate for strain and / or weakness and result in further injury on soft tissues with mild to severe pain and loss of function as the two most common symptoms.

Ex-Athletes Know Best
As an athlete, you need to be in tip-top physical shape to perform to the best of your ability.
Our chiropractors know this from their own athletic experiences; they both were top-level athletes in their respective sports at one point.
Combining these experiences with their chiropractic training, Dr. Battershill and Dr. Belliveau have developed a broad clinical understanding of athletic injuries and how to treat them.
Dr. John Battershill
Dr. Battershill began his career at Webber State on a scholarship then pursued a career in the Canadian Football League (CFL) with the Calgary Stampeders.
He was traded to the Toronto Argonauts in the early 80’s and retired soon after to become a chiropractor.
Dr. John’s experience with personal injury and seeing his friends sustain career-altering injuries was a key motivator for him to become a chiropractor and help athletes.
Dr. Keith Belliveau
Dr. Belliveau began his post-secondary at University of Calgary where he received his Bachelor of Kinesiology.
He then went to Life Chiropractic College in the San Francisco Bay area where he played on a full scholarship for the Life West Gladiators rugby team (USA Rugby Div. II National Champions).
Dr. Keith’s passion for sports and living an active, healthy lifestyle played a huge role in his decision to pursue a career as a chiropractor.

10 Ways We Treat Sport Injuries
Initially, our chiropractors will begin treatment by identifying the cause of your symptoms and do a thorough assessment to determine if there were any underlying pre-dispositions that made you more vulnerable to the injury in the first place.
The body of an athlete is constantly experiencing stresses whether it be from:
- physical contact in hockey
- repetitive swings on the golf course
- running back and forth across the field of play
… as a few examples. Often, small subluxations develop that are pre-cursor to more severe injury. Once the underlying causes have been identified (if any), addressing inflammation and pain while aiming to restore soft tissue function and bone alignment begins.
There are several treatment methods our chiropractors use, of which may be suggested alone or in combination with others:
#1 – Chiropractic Care
Subluxations (misalignment) of the extremity joints or spinal column usually go hand-in-hand with injuries resulting from sports. Muscle testing and chiropractic adjustments will be performed using a variety of techniques such as:
- Activator methods
- Flexion distraction
- Diversified technique
…to name a few. Depending on the type and severity of your sports injury, getting re-aligned will help to restore function and reduce symptoms such as pain and inflammation.

#2 – Active Release Technique / Soft Tissue Therapy
Damaged soft tissues, i.e. muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves, have a different texture and tension when in motion and can be identified by our chiropractors through feeling them.
Restoring soft tissue function using active release is accomplished by holding the soft tissue with tension in a shortened position while moving its structure through a full range of motion.
This lengthens the muscle and stimulates tissue growth within the body.

#3 – Cox® Technique Decompression
Cox® Technique is a proven form of disc rehabilitation and spinal decompression that makes use of a specially-engineered chiropractic table for it to be performed. Our sports injury clinic has one of these tables.
Patients lay down on the table and are strapped in by their feet and / or neck which helps to stretch and decompress their spinal column (neck and back).
Cox® is a proven flexion-distraction technique that helps remediate the back and neck pain that many athletes experience at one point or another in their sporting careers.

#4 – Cold Laser Therapy
Cold laser therapy works to reduce inflammation and pain – sometimes almost immediately – by supplying light energy to the body which is then transformed to chemical energy on a cellular level, helping the body regenerate faster.
Our sports injury clinic in Calgary uses the state-of-the-art Theralase TLC-2000 non-thermal therapeutic laser, a non-invasive and non-toxic laser system with absolutely no side effects.

#5 – Custom Footmaxx Orthotics
Abnormal foot biomechanics can cause several complications for athletes who do a lot of running such as:
- Shin splints
- Plantar fasciitis
- Achilles tendonitis
Correcting how your feet distribute your body weight can also help reduce knee pain, hip pain and several other conditions that result from improper foot biomechanics.
Our sports injury clinic in Calgary offers Footmaxx, a proven line of custom orthotics to help correct any complications you have that may affect your athletic performance.

#6 – Huber Motion Lab
The Huber Motion Lab is a state-of-the-art medical machine that helps create equilibrium between the brain and body through strategic exercises.
Athletes who have suffered severe concussions and need therapy to restore function benefit greatly from the input our Huber Motion Lab creates into their brain.
The brain needs a 40 to 1 input to output ratio for its cells to begin healing, meaning damaged brain cells resulting from concussion need lots of stimulation before they begin working correctly again. Our Huber Motion Lab accomplishes this through its rigorous and customizable exercise programs.

#7 – Interactive Metronome
Interactive Metronome is another concussion therapy used at our sports injury clinic in Calgary. It helps the brain restore output from damaged cells by input through timing and rhythmic drills in a repetitive fashion.
Interactive Metronome can help concussed athletes restore motor coordination and balance, attention and body function, response times and more.

#8 – Eyelights
The use of eyelights is another concussion therapy technique used at our sports injury clinic in Calgary. A specially designed pair of sunglasses has four lights surrounding each lens that flash intermittently when worn which acts to stimulate the brain and restore function.
These eyelights come in pairs and will be recommended (or not) based on an initial assessment performed by one of our chiropractors. They come in four different colors which are used based on the part of your brain that is damaged.

#9 – Physiotherapy Exercises
Damaged soft tissues won’t heal if they aren’t used, which is why do-it-at-home exercises are useful in elongating tightened tissues and restoring function.
Our chiropractors prescribe exercises if they deem it would be beneficial to your recovery and speed up the process. Exercises are an essential part of recovery from almost all cases of sport injury.
#10 – Nutrition & Supplementation
Recovering from a sports injury can be prolonged or quickened depending on your diet. Our chiropractors may make recommendations on what to eat / not eat to help with your recovery.
Certain supplements may also be recommended as a part of your treatment plan which will provide your body with the nutrients it needs to make as speedy of a recovery as possible.
A Word on Sports Injuries…
Soft tissues and joints are complex and made up of bone, cartilage / discs, ligaments, muscles, tendons and nerves. As specialists in treating sports injuries, we assess the degree of injury and sprain or strain to a joint or part of the body and identify the actual tissue that is damaged. Identification is key in facilitating the creation of an effective treatment plan and speedy recovery.
In addition to identifying and treating the injured tissue(s), we move people away from symptoms such as pain and towards health so that they don’t experience a “relapse” by treating any root causes that may have contributed to the injury being suffered in the first place.
We are passionate about treating athletes for sports injuries because we know what it takes to perform at the top of your game and be the best you can be. Let us help you!
