What is Soft Tissue Release?
Soft tissue therapy / myofascial release is a hands-on treatment method used primarily to treat problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves.
It helps alleviate pain caused by muscle injury which, in some cases also compresses nerves and blood vessels.
People who are involved in repetitive work and / or sports activities are more prone to suffering the types of injuries treatable by soft tissue therapy / myofascial release because of their repetitive muscle use and over exertion.
Problems can become compounded if the overused area is injured again, which is why it’s important to treat these injuries as soon as possible.

How Does Overuse of Muscles Occur?
Soft tissues such as muscles and ligaments change in three distinct ways when experiencing trauma, including:
- acute occurrences (pulls, tears, blunt force trauma, etc)
- accumulation of smaller tears (micro-traumas)
- lack of oxygenation (hypoxia)
Just one, or a combination of two or all three of these factors can result in the production of scar tissue in the affected region, reducing the range of motion of soft tissues that need to move in order to work properly.
The build-up of scar tissue causes muscles to become both shorter and weaker, tendons to become inflamed (tendonitis) and nerves to become trapped or pinched off (also caused by subluxations).
As a result, the range of motion and strength of the affected area can be greatly reduced and in immense pain. Trapped nerves may also result in numbing or tingling and weakness.
Treatable Conditions
Often, conditions considered permanent such as carpal tunnel or tendonitis can be resolved using soft tissue therapy / myofascial release.
Other treatable injuries and conditions:
- Bursitis
- Knee problems
- Lower back pain
- Nerve pain
- Plantar fasciitis
- Sciatica
- Shoulder pain
- Shin splints
- Tension headaches
- Tennis / golfers elbow
- Torn and / or ripped ligaments, tendons
