Interactive Metronome

What is Interactive Metronome?

Interactive Metronome® (IM) is a tool designed to help treat problems with attention, coordination and memory in patients. It accomplishes this by helping the brain strengthen its ability to coordinate thoughts and movement together.

This evidence-based assessment and training tool helps strengthen the brain’s ability to synchronize thought and movement to a steady metronome beat. The device responds to a client’s physical performance by providing real-time auditory and visual millisecond feedback indicating whether they are hitting before, after or in sync with the beat.

The overall goal of IM training is to improve timing in the brain, or “neuro-timing”, through rhythm and repetition. This in turn can improve attention, coordination and memory in patients who have suffered injuries such as concussions or have degenerative brain diseases such as Parkinson’s.

IM is a part of the treatment process for a variety of health conditions at Revelation Health Centre. Learn more below:

Rhythm & Timing in Our Daily Lives

brain nw calgary neurology chiropractor concussion rehab

Many tasks and communications we complete all day, every day are ruled by rhythm and timing. If our internal clock is functioning less than optimally, the following abilities are likely not working the way you would like them to:

Cognitive abilities – including attention, memory, processing speed, cognitive stamina, planning, organizing, sequencing and time management

Speech and language skills – including (but not limited to) reading comprehension and fluency as well as articulation and speech intelligibility

Social-behavioral skills – conversation skills, eye contact, impulse control, aggression, hyperactivity, disinhibition

Sensory processing – which involves how the brain organizes sensation from the body and from the environment. When this is not working properly, people can have problems with being over-responsive or under-responsive

Motor skills / athletic performance – coordination, balance, gait, posture

Academic performance – reading rate, fluency, comprehension, attention to relevant details
