Causes of Back Pain
Facet joints found on the back side of every spinal bone are rich in nerves. If these interlocking “fingers” of the spine aren’t moving correctly, they can cause symptoms of mild to severe pain in the back.
As a matter of fact, interference in these nerves due to misalignment of the facet joints is a common cause of back pain.
The discs found between spinal bones can also be a cause of back pain. These circular fibrous tissues act as connectors, spacers and shock absorbers between spinal joints.
When they experience trauma, these soft, pulpy discs can start to bulge or herniate, putting stress on the nearby nerves.
Other common causes include:
- Strained muscles & ligaments
- Heavy lifting / improper lifting methods
- Arthritis
- Poor sleeping mattress
- Poor posture
- Unusual curvature of the spine
How to Get Rid of Back Pain?
Once you’ve found the cause of your back pain, there are several choices available to you to help alleviate it.
Resting in bed
One of those is to rest in bed, although some studies show that this can make the problem worse depending on the type of mattress you have.
Pain-killers
You could also consider relying on prescription drugs to cover up the pain, although these would only provide temporary relief and cannot correct the underlying cause of your back pain. Once your body gets used to any drug they would also become much less effective in covering up the symptom.
Physiotherapy
Another option would be to do physiotherapy, however, exercising spinal joints that aren’t functioning properly is comparable to driving your car when its 10,000 km overdue for an oil-change which isn’t the best idea.
Correcting posture
You could always try to maintain better posture throughout the day to help correct your back pain. This would help to reduce further damage and misalignment, although may be painful due to the current condition of your back.
Chiropractic Care
While many people many try to do one or any combination of the four things mentioned above to fix their back pain, there’s a much more natural and holistic way to get relief: chiropractic care.
Chiropractic is a safe and proven form of treatment for lower, middle and upper back pain. Every person is different, which is why your chiropractor will do a thorough examination to determine what is causing your back pain.
Adjustment techniques
The most common method used by chiropractors treating back pain is spinal manipulation, as more often than not the symptom of pain is a result of subluxations in the spine.
The practitioner will apply a controlled force to bones, joints and other soft tissues that have had their movement impaired due to subluxations, using his hands to make the necessary adjustments.
Correcting spinal subluxations will reduce any stresses put onto spinal nerves by misaligned discs and / or joints, giving your spine the flexibility and functionality it needs and reduce any back pain you may be experiencing as a result.
Other techniques used by chiropractors to help alleviate back pain include:
- Table adjustments
- Soft tissue and myofascial release
- Activator adjustment technique
- Articulatory technique
- Cox® Technic – spinal decompression
After adjustments and spinal decompression, your chiropractor may recommend doing some secondary treatment options to further help alleviate your back pain. These could include:
- Cold laser therapy
- Home stretches and exercises
- Physiotherapy
- Nutritional / lifestyle changes
