Get Treatment for Whiplash in Calgary!
Have you recently experienced a traumatic event where your head was forcefully thrown backwards then forward again and have neck pain as a result?
If so, there’s a chance you may have whiplash.
The force that results in a whiplash injury can do considerable damage to your spinal cord, spinal discs, ligaments, muscles, nerves and other soft tissues in your neck.
This is why it’s extremely important for you to get assessed or seek treatment for whiplash immediately, even if you have only mild pain or discomfort!
Revelation Health Centre’s team of Chiropractors are skilled at treating musculoskeletal injuries of all sorts, including whiplash!
Causes of Whiplash
According to the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC), whiplash injuries account for more than 2 million insurance claims across Canada each year.
It’s also been said that whiplash accounts for over 65% of all physical injury claims (Navan et al., 2000)!
This neck injury happens in many ways, the most common include:
Motor vehicle accidents – whether you’re on a motor bike, seadoo or in a car, getting hit from behind forcefully
Contact sports – football and hockey players, for example, are sometimes hit in a way that causes the head to thrust backwards then forward with such force that it results in a sports-related whiplash injury
Physical altercations / abuse – being forcefully shaken or punched in the head can result in whiplash and sometimes even a concussion
Slips and trips – falling on ice or slipping in a way that throws your head with enough force
Symptoms of Whiplash
Many people think that whiplash is an extremely painful injury when in fact symptoms can range from mild to severe.
Fact is that even mild pain and discomfort after a car accident or sports injury can be signs of whiplash.
If you aren’t totally sure, look for the following whiplash symptoms:
- Pain in the neck, shoulder, back and arm
- Numbness or tingling in the fingers, hands and arms
- Headaches at the base of the skull that radiate towards your forehead
- Stiff neck – inability to move or turn your head
- Tenderness in your neck’s soft tissues
- Pain when moving or turning your head
- Blurred vision
- Dizziness
- Difficulty sleeping
- Depression
Concussions: An Associated Whiplash Injury
Concussions are another injury sustained by many whiplash patients. The blow that causes the neck strain goes hand in hand with this brain injury in addition to spinal and extremity joint subluxations, disc bulges and herniation and pulled ligaments / muscles in the neck.
In other words, having your head jolted in such a way can cause many other types of injuries other than whiplash, which is why it’s so important you see a Chiropractor to get assessed and start treatment immediately.
Dr. Battershill at Revelation Health Centre specializes in treating concussions in a drug-free and holistic way using Chiropractic Functional Neurology combined with other methods.

A Word on Whiplash…
Whiplash is a common injury related to motor vehicle accidents but can also result from a sudden extension or flexion of the neck, much like what happens when you slip on ice or are in athletic competition where your body gets hit but your head keeps going.
These injuries affect every area of the joint complex; bone, cartilage, discs, ligaments, muscles and tendons. Because of this, pain and discomfort can be extreme after suffering whiplash.
We have specific soft tissue techniques that treat every area of the joint complex including a laser to control inflammation that accumulates in the deepest soft tissues around the sprained and strained joint(s).
Realignment of the injured bones in the spine is of paramount importance which then relieves the tension on the nervous system and causes the muscles to rebalance in a normal pattern around the joint from front to back, side to side or top to bottom.
From a nutritional perspective we look at natural anti-inflammatories and specific nutrients that strengthen the sprained ligaments and cartilage, returning them to as close to normal strength as possible.
If the cartilage is compressed, it will deteriorate, which can lead to degenerative arthritis. We also have a special decompression table that relieves this extra build up inside the joint that causes the cartilage to continue to degenerate.
We then recommend specific whiplash rehab exercises that will restore all the normal curves in the spine as it relates to postural improvements.
Our assessment / treatment approach is comprehensive and considers all of the biomechanical variables related to a whiplash injury of the spine and soft tissue concerns that are associated with it.
