Many people think that sugar is found only in things like candy, cookies and cakes. Truth is, however, that the ingredient is often added to other unsuspecting foods such as bread and tomato sauce.

Added sugar comes in many forms, which is why just because there’s no “sugar” on the ingredient list doesn’t necessarily mean that food product has none. As a matter of fact, there are a ton of different names for sugar.

Sugar Leads the Way to Disease

In 1930, Dr. Otto Warburg was awarded with the Nobel Prize for discovering the role that sugar plays in the development of cancer. However, for whatever reason the adverse side effects of high sugar intake isn’t widely discussed.

Heart disease

Excessive sugar intake can also result in weight gain. This, combined with high insulin levels (also a side effect of a high sugar diet) can lead to diabetes – a condition that increases your chance of succumbing to heart disease.

Liver Disease

Your liver has a limited ability to metabolize sugar. As a matter of fact, it uses fructose – a type of sugar – to make fat, so too much of it can cause a fatty liver that can lead to liver disease. Some studies even suggest that sugar can be just as damaging to the liver as alcohol.

Brain Disease

High sugar levels have been shown to increase the risk of neurological disease. Once blood sugar levels reach a “threshold” value, they restrict the function of a vital protein which normally battles inflammation in the brain associated with several degenerative brain diseases.

Chiropractors are in the business of keeping you healthy which is why you’ve probably heard your chiro tell you to avoid eating it a few times before. Sugar leeches essential nutrients from bones and soft tissues, causing osteoporosis and weakened muscles, joints and / or ligaments.

Furthermore, when you ingest refined sugar, you’re being provided with what most nutritionists call “naked” or “empty” calories as it lacks the nutrients which are present in raw sugar cane.

There are many aspects of consumption of sugar that people should be aware of.

The first thing is that excess consumption of sugar creates inflammation in various parts of your body. When this occurs, the body’s defence mechanism is to suck in water to dilute the toxins that are related to inflammation. This causes puffiness in the tissues and creates a general fatigue of energy because of slowing down of the metabolism.

The other aspect of excess sugar consumption is that it will cause a pH shift in the tissues to a more acidic state. This acidity will start leaching alkaline minerals out of the joints which happens to be the greatest source of alkalinity in our body and initially will create loose / clicking / popping instability in the joints. This will lead to increased muscle tension that usually causes people to seek massage, but massage therapy treatments will only be a temporary resolution to the increased muscle tension which is coming from the underlying instability in the ligaments and cartilage. A long term chronic acidity will directly contribute to osteoporosis (weak bones) and osteoarthritis (stiff joints).

These reasons and more that are unmentioned is why I recommend to my patients to be careful with their daily sugar intake levels and try their best to maintain a healthy, well-rounded diet.
