Common Myths about Chiropractors Explained
Many Canadians wonder what kind of benefits are associated with receiving chiropractic care on a regular basis.
After becoming a doctor of chiropractic, every practitioner may specialize in certain areas or treatment methods, which is why you’ll have to ask your local chiropractor just exactly what it is that they can do for you.
But regardless of the differences between practitioners, there are some myths out there that apply to all chiropractors in Canada.
Here are the three most common ones we’ve heard about from people in and outside Revelation Health Centre:
Myth #1 – Chiropractors are not ‘real’ doctors
Canadian professionals are required to adhere to some of the strictest rules and regulations through their respective associations.
Chiropractic is one of these professions; chiropractors are regulated in every Canadian province and allowed to use the title of “doctor” only after they complete the degree program required to become a Doctor of Chiropractic.
There’s a reason why optometrists, physicians, dentists and chiropractors all are legally permissed to use the title “doctor”. They have extensive training in their respective area that allows them to diagnose and treat people using methods within their expertise.
Education of a Chiropractor
- At least 7 years of post-secondary education & training
- 4,500 hours of clinical education
- A 12-month clinical internship
Chiropractors have the option to pursue specialization at one of Canada’s three chiropractic colleges. For example, the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC) in Toronto – where Dr. Battershill completed his D.C. – offers graduate studies in clinical studies, rehabilitation sciences, sport sciences and radiology.
Many chiropractors continue their education past graduation and learn how to use new medical technologies that will benefit their patient base.
A few examples:
- BrainTap – Stress Relief Technology
- Huber Body Motion Lab – Brain Rehabilitation & Physical Fitness
- TLC-2000 Cold Laser System – Soft Tissue Pain & Inflammation
Myth #2 – Chiropractic adjustments are painful
Most often chiropractic adjustments will not hurt whatsoever. As a matter of fact, many patients in Canada report immediate relief from pain and other symptoms after an adjustment.
Sometimes patients are nervous about the ‘cracking’ and / or popping sounds they hear that may occur during treatment. This sound is believed to happen due to the release of tiny gas bubbles from the joint after an adjustment takes place.
There can be side effects of receiving an adjustment such as soreness and pain, although these are rare. If an adjustment is painful, the chiropractor will re-assess his technique to accomplish what he has set out to do without making the patient uncomfortable.
Myth #3 – You must return for more than one visit
This is not true. Chiropractors perform an initial in-depth assessment of a patients’ extremities, spine, nervous system, muscles and soft tissues to determine what is causing their dysfunction and symptoms.
After this information has been collected, they will make a diagnosis along with a customized treatment plan in accordance with the patients’ wants and needs from a health perspective to get them back on track towards healthy living.
Chiropractors will recommend visiting a certain amount of times for maybe a month or two or longer until he / she believes that the patient will have overcome what they are seeking treatment for. This, of course, largely depends on what the patients’ condition is and its severity.
Preventative maintenance is something that chiropractors do believe in as it can prevent patients’ from re-visiting unwanted symptoms and health conditions.
