Chiropractor Shares Experience w/ Treating Wrist Pain Due to Misalignment
The wrist is just one of many different extremity joints of your body that may experience pain or discomfort due to chemical, emotional or physical stresses.
For example, wrist pain is often caused by blunt force trauma (physical stress) that results in fractures or sprains. If you play sports, then this type of injury might be more familiar to you than it is for others.
Wrist pain can also result from long-term complications such as arthritis and carpal tunnel syndrome to name a few. Learn more at Chiropractic Advice – Episode #3 – Factors in Treating Arthritis.
What could be the cause of your wrist pain?
Symptoms of wrist pain may vary. For example, a subluxation or misalignment in the elbow due to a sports injury could cause stress on the wrist bones and result in pain in your wrist when lifting even the lightest object.
On the other hand, long-term degenerative diseases like carpal tunnel may cause a pins-and-needles or a tingling sensation. With osteoarthritis, there’s usually a dull but constant aching pain that can last throughout the day and is most prominent at night.
Fortunately, our Chiropractors provide all-round healthcare that not only treats back and neck pain, but that of the extremity joints like the wrist as well. Here’s one of Dr. Battershill’s most recent experiences with treating a patients’ wrist pain.
Episode #5 – Elbow + Shoulder Misalignment = Wrist Pain
Have you heard the old saying… “the thigh bone is connected to the hip bone, and the hip bone is connected to the backbone” and so on and so forth? Well in this case the shoulder bone is connected to the elbow bone and the elbow bone is connected to the wrist bone.
Recently a patient came to my office with moderate to severe wrist pain. To make a long story short, her elbow was misaligned but so was her rib cage. The right side of her rib cage was shifting because of an old injury she had that was never treated properly. This caused her first rib on the right side to rise up and pinch a nerve at the base of her neck, weakening the external rotators of the right shoulder.
This caused an over dominance of the internal rotators which is called an impingement syndrome because it closes the joint and reduces the space that the shoulder can move in. This impingement causes pain deep in the shoulder which can sometimes radiate halfway down the arm bone.
This misalignment at the shoulder was like a domino effect, causing extreme misalignment in the elbow and causing the two forearm bones to literally separate from themselves. The result was that she had a whole bunch of muscle weakness patterns on one side of her wrist joint causing a whole lot of pain.
This example goes to show you that to treat the underlying cause, a biomechanical assessment of the entire body must be performed. It’s like that old saying I mentioned above… “the wrist bone is connected to the elbow bone, and the elbow bone is connected to the shoulder bones.”
This comprehensive evaluation is standard for the Chiropractors at Revelation Health Centre – Dr. Keith and myself. We love helping patients move away from pain and towards health by treating the underlying cause.
