Chiropractor Talks Neck Pain Can Be a Symptom, Not the Cause
Did you know that your neck pain may be caused by something else other than your neck? Dr. John Battershill, Chiropractor at Revelation Health, knows all too well how an issue in one part of the body can cause a complication in another.
That’s why it’s important to determine what the underlying cause of your neck pain is. This is something that Dr. Battershill and Dr. Belliveau at Revelation Health Clinic are passionate about!
Below, Dr. Battershill discusses how sometimes he sees patients where neck pain is actually the symptom and not the cause. This often is a surprise to patients!
Episode #7 – Three Underlying Causes of Neck Pain…
“I sometimes see patients who come in with neck pain who are sure that it’s something to do with their neck. That’s not always the case.
At Revelation Health Centre, we treat the underlying cause of the problem to prevent pain and symptoms from coming back.
One the most common problems I see where neck pain is a symptom and not a cause is because of a compensation due to an unlevel shoulder/rib cage. Stress creates a reaction in the gut, causing a shift of blood into the muscles in the fight or flight reaction and that destabilizes the rib cage.
The rib cage can become unlevel causing a pulling down on one side and a raising up on the other side. This causes the muscles of the neck to compensate which eventually creates a drag on the joints and can give mild to moderate or even severe neck pain.
Another big cause of neck pain is when people hear clicking and popping in their joints when they move. This is commonly a reaction to stress where the ligaments go weak. If the ligaments are weak, then the muscles have to over contract to compensate and that also can create a shift and an imbalance that creates neck pain.
A third problem I see often where neck pain is a symptom and not a cause is when the jaw coming from the head down is strained, creating an imbalance in the muscles that hold the head on the neck. Mild to severe neck pain results.
