Episode #1 – Personal Experience With Concussions
“I experienced my first concussion at the age of 12 playing amateur football. During my football scholarship at Weber State University in Utah and pro career in the CFL with the Argos and Stamps, I received five more concussions due to the physical nature and increased intensity of the game at those levels. Four of these six concussions rendered me unconscious for a period of time.
I never received proper treatment for those concussions and later started experiencing symptoms of pain tied to underlying health problems that stemmed from these repeated brain traumas. This motivated me to become a doctor that could help people in the same position as I was at that critical time of my life. Part of my goal of becoming a chiropractor was to provide concussion therapy to athletes and people from all walks of life so that they could recover faster and not experience the same suffering that I did.
Every concussion, whether it leads to being knocked unconscious or not, requires a medical assessment and therapy to heal properly. Traumatic brain injuries like a concussion, if left untreated, can cause further complications in the future like loss of cognitive function, symptoms of pain in the form of migraines or headaches, poor coordination and everything in between.
The first step in treating traumatic brain injuries like concussions, for example, is to treat any musculoskeletal misalignments that may have developed as a result. Sports injuries are known to impair alignment in the spinal column which can cause pinched nerves and reduced function in the body. The brain relies on nerves to communicate between it and other parts of the body, therefore chiropractic adjustments and retraining the muscles to restore healthy movement is important.
I know how painful and hard it can be to suffer from post-concussion symptoms. I want you to know that there is hope and that your brain can one day feel better and function without pain again. Don’t give up!”
