Arthritis (inflammation of the joints) can quickly take the pep out of your step during your daily routine. It may affect only one or several parts of your body at once, which is why treatment is necessary so that you can go about your daily life without symptoms.
There are more than 100 different types of arthritis, each with its own set of causes and ways of treating it. Some common symptoms of arthritis include:
- Decreased range of motion
These symptoms typically develop over an extended period of time, but have been known to appear without warning in some individuals.

Dysfunction is the first phase of arthritic change in the body that happens when an injury occurs from slipping on the ice, trying to hit a golf ball too hard, too much gardening, or from a number of
Dysfunction is characterized by inflammation and a disruption in normal joint movement. After the joint movement has been disrupted, it then moves into instability where the ligaments around a sprained joint causes hyper mobility, or where the joint moves too far.
This is characterized by when the patient hears clicking or popping in their body when moving and / or stretching to reach for an object, for example.
If the instability phase is left untreated for any length of time, any loose ligaments can become inflamed and calcify. This is what forms the bone spurs of an arthritic joint.

The next phase of an arthritic joint is stiffening where inflammation in the ligaments around a joint has contributed to calcification and the creation of bone spurs. As these bone spurs grow, the joint gifts stiffer and stiffer and two bones ultimately lose the joint space and become one bone.
This process can occur if there is a high level of acidity in the body or a deficiency of minerals in the diet. This creates ever increasing amounts of stiffness with muscle over contraction as a compensation which is called arthritis.
Nutrition & Inflammation
Inflammation is a significant part of arthritis which correlates directly with nutrition. The following circumstances may increase inflammation and make arthritis symptoms much worse:
- food allergies or sensitivities
- an unhealthy diet causing an irritable bowel
- high chemical load from environment and / or medications
- toxicity from foods sprayed with pesticides and having other contaminants
In addition to arthritis being related to misalignment of a joint, it is also related to weak ligaments and soft cartilage, both of which can be addressed easily. We also would want to chemically shift inflammation in the body to anti-inflammatory by using herbal medicines, fish oil and other products.
Chiropractic Care – While treatments for different types of arthritis will vary, generally it involves restoring movement in the joints, lowering stiffness and improving overall function of the nervous system by chiropractic adjustments.
Nutrition – As mentioned above, if an arthritic patient has toxicity in the body from external sources our chiropractors will recommend certain nutritional supplements and lifestyle changes to help reduce symptoms and promote the overall health of the individual.
Cold Laser Therapy – Our state-of-the-art laser system helps control inflammatory reaction and help promote soft tissue regeneration on a cellular level, as well as reduce stiffness. Laser treats tendonitis that accompanies arthritis after muscles are balanced and aligned properly.

I am confident to say that there has been no arthritic patient case too difficult for me to help treat since I started my chiropractic career. If you are suffering from such symptoms, I would love to see you in my clinic soon so that I can help you manage and recover from your arthritis!
