MVAs: What is Covered?
#1 – Your auto insurance covers you for a minimum of 10 (but up to 21) chiropractic treatments for minor injuries as described in the Alberta Government’s Diagnostic & Treatment Protocols Regulation, Part 2.
#2 – Chiropractic care for minor injuries is billed directly to your insurance company. For reimbursement, you do not need to provide receipts. Make sure you communicate with your chiropractor that you were injured in an auto accident so that they fill out the appropriate forms to have your treatment costs covered.
#3 – Other automobile insurance programs, every Albertan is entitled to $750 of chiropractic care coverage for injuries resulting from a motor vehicle accident.
MVAs: How Can I Get Treatment Immediately?
Within 10 days of your car accident, you must:
#1 – File an injury accident report with the police
#2 – Contact your insurance company and file an injury claim and accident claim. You will be assigned a claims adjuster for each.
#3 – Make an appointment with a chiropractor, physical therapist or physician. You do not need authorization from your insurer if your injuries are considered minor (sprains, strains, minor whiplash, etc). You can begin treatment from your healthcare provider and your insurance company will be billed accordingly.
#4 – Complete and submit the appropriate forms with your insurance company, including the Notice of Loss and Proof of Claim (Form AB-1). Our practitioners will complete an AB-2 Form at your first appointment then submit both on your behalf, if not done so already.
If you ever have any questions about this process, it’s important to contact your auto insurance company and ask about your motor vehicle accident coverage under section B of the Alberta Diagnostic & Treatment Protocols Regulation.

A Word on Auto Accidents…
With the human head weighing 12-14 pounds, getting hit from behind by another motor vehicle can cause significant force and momentum resulting in injuries of the discs, ligaments, cartilage, tendons, and in severe whiplash accidents there can be small fractures.
When it comes to auto accident injuries, it’s important to deal with the inflammation that arises from the sprain and strain injury of the cervical spine and upper back.
Decompressing the injured nerves using a safe and comfortable technique called spinal decompression is a very effective technique that helps people who have had car accidents recover from symptoms.
I also use soft tissue techniques to rebalance the muscle tissues so that there are balanced contractions of the muscles from side to side on the bones of the head and vertebrae of the neck.
Motor vehicle accident injuries always rehab in layers which essentially means it takes time to heal the injury to the deepest layer of connective tissue around the spine. Recovering from such injuries, in many cases, is like peeling the layers off an onion; eventually you get to the centre and symptoms and pain are gone!
