Calgary Chiropractor Explains 5 Not So Well Known Concussion Facts
Concussions are a type of brain injury that most people are somewhat familiar with in this day and age.
However, there are several characteristics of concussions that many don’t know, ones that could be important for someone engaged in physical activity on a regular basis and prone to such injury.
If you or a loved one plays sports or enjoys an active lifestyle, it’s always a good thing to know as much as you can about this type of brain injury as it can happen suddenly and not always the way that you’d think.

#1 – Not just contact to the head
You don’t have to hit your head to incur a concussion, there just needs to be a sudden stoppage of the body in relation to the head.
For example, I’ve seen patients who have suffered a concussion after receiving a blow to the chest and shoulder, or slipping on ice and landing on the back because when they whiplashed their neck, they also whiplashed their brain inside the skull.
#2 – Healing involves the five senses
The way we heal a concussion is by activating the five senses of the body. They include:
Depending on where the injury is will depend on how our chiropractors activate the five senses to activate specific neurons to start firing again.
For example, you may be asked to put a supplement underneath your tongue or put on a pair of our eye lights to see how the brain reacts to certain tastes and other stimuli.

#3 – Healthy output requires healthy input
To restore healthy output after suffering a concussion, you must have healthy input.
The most important way of activating the brain to rehabilitate a concussion is to stimulate neurons in the spine and the joints of the body.
This involves chiropractic adjustments, functional neurology assessments and other treatment methods that promote central nervous system health and act to reduce symptoms associated with concussions.
#4 – Concussions aren’t just a physical injury
in addition to the mechanical injury to the physical neuron that gets traumatized by a concussion, there is also a chemical injury that occurs in the affected neurons.
Therefore, concussions need to be treated properly using nutritional supplementation; to date, there are virtually no medications that have been proven to work for concussions.
#5 – The more, the easier
Total concussion load is accumulative in life. Very frequently, if a person has had a lot of concussions it usually takes a lot less of an impact to generate a serious injury.
The reason why is because the live brain is the consistency of pudding inside the skull, therefore it’s easy to understand how if you’ve already had an injury, you can become re-injured more easily as that pudding is more likely to move when jolted.
