There are some lifestyle considerations you can make that will help prevent and / or reduce lower back pain:
#1 – Exercise – regular physical activity has been proven to strengthen muscles, ease muscle tension and reduce inflammation. Lower back pain can sometimes result from instability of the soft tissues, therefore exercise will also help strengthen the muscles and keep your lower back. Make sure to use correct posture if weightlifting!
#2 – Stop smoking – if you smoke, do your best to stop! Chemicals found within cigarettes restrict the flow of nutrient-rich blood to the discs of the spine. Because of this, smokers are especially prone to experiencing lower back pain compared to those who don’t.
#3 – Watch your weight – extra weight, especially on your hips and stomach, can create a shift of gravity and make your lower back pain worse than normal. Find out what your ideal weight is from a nutritionist, trainer or diet specialist and try to stay within 10 pounds of that weight to help manage lower back pain.
#4 – Be wary of posture – If you’re forced to sit all day at school or work, try to maintain a straight back / neck with your shoulders held back and stomach pulled in. If you can, use an attachable back support or buy your own chair with a straight, supportive back of its own.
#5 – Sleeping position – the way you sleep may have a profound effect on your body and create lower back pain. Try to find a position that supports your back while staying comfortable at the same time. Also, soft mattresses may cause back pain because of the lack of support. Is it time for you to upgrade to a more firm mattress?
If you have a flat or excessively high arches, your feet and ankles may tend to roll inward while walking. This can cause problems such as bunions and calluses while also having a more profound effect on your alignment.
Pronated feet and ankles may also result in the knees turning inward, which can shift the angle where the pelvis and thigh bone meet and cause misalignment in the hip and spinal column. This is called the “domino” effect that starts at the feet and works its way up the body. Walking in misalignment can cause serious lower back pain, as well as a slurry of other related health problems.
If you’re experiencing lower back pain in Calgary, it may very well be because of a problem with your feet. Revelation Health Centre Chiropractic & Wellness Clinic offer a state-of-the-art line of custom orthotics called Footmaxx.
